Seems like the 4-2-3-1 formation with 2 holding midfield is the new preferred formation especially for stronger European teams. 3 out of 4 teams in the semi of the world cup, Spain, Holland and Germany played in a variation of this formation in the World Cup....probably this formation provide stability without comprimising attacking creativity?

indeed.
such formation is flexible in most circumstances, scalable to play with 6 defenders or 4 midfielders depending on the situation. plus it provides a layer of protection to the defenders.
unless a team has a dynamo like essien to anchor the middle of the park, 4-2-3-1 is still one of the reliable formations even for amatuer team.
ultimately, formation will only work with discipline, esp the 4-2 segment. without players sticking to their roles, what kind of formation will also end up as 3-0-7 formation as the game goes by.
